Principal's Welcome

Mrs. L. Currie Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils,

Welcome to Lurgan Junior High School. On behalf of our Board of Governors, our Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff and our current Pupils, I want to take this opportunity to tell you just a little about our school.

Lurgan JHS is an inclusive, all ability Key Stage 3 school which welcomes pupils and families from all faiths and backgrounds and is proud to do so within a Christian ethos and with Christian values of tolerance, respect and love. This is reflected in our School Motto – the 3 ‘R’s- Respect for self, Respect for others, their property and the school environment and the promotion of Responsibility. We strive to develop these values in our entire school community by providing a safe, caring and tolerant environment, through the development of positive relationships at all levels, through the implementation of our school policies and through active and innovative learning and teaching.

By providing high quality teaching and learning through a broad and balanced curriculum, we set high expectations for all learners. Our pupils have many opportunities to develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes to learning across all subject areas. Throughout the school year we have regular Celebratory Assemblies in order to share everyone’s successes and achievements. This supports the positive relationships we wish to develop between our Governors, staff, pupils, parents and the wider community.

As teachers we want your children to succeed, to build on their strengths, to recognise that they have areas for development and to understand that through the many and varied enriching experiences, both, in the classroom and in extra-curricular, each individual can grow to be and to do the very best they can.

To this end, there is a Positive Conduct and Behaviour Policy supported by Lesson Monitor which records all our young people’s achievements and behaviours. This allows the Form Teacher and Year Head to monitor progress at any time. By challenging our pupils to give their best, in respect of behaviour, uniform, curriculum and in extra-curricular, we live up to our School Mission Statement of 'empowering our young people to reach their potential, to feel respected, cared for and equal.'

This is further supported by our Student Council – ‘The Pupil Voice’ representing all year groups and all ‘Bands’ within the school. This student body meets regularly to bring about change for the greater good of all pupils. They are listened to and a number of actions have been taken to support and affect change within the school.

We work hard to ensure that our young people choose the right pathway to reflect their ability, aptitude and needs. At the end of Year 10, they have the opportunity to move on to either Lurgan College or Craigavon Senior High School where they will continue their education. Both offer many opportunities for our pupils. The REACH Team, our partners in pastoral care have developed links with our partner Primary and Senior High schools and they continue the excellent work they have initiated in Lurgan JHS in supporting our pupils to develop greater confidence, self-esteem and self-belief.

At Lugan JHS, we want your child to enjoy the classroom, the after school clubs and the relationships they make with others within the school community. As a child centred school, all our committed teachers work hard to ensure that each and every individual reaches their potential in a supported and safe environment. To that end, I invite you to view the rest of our website so that you too can see for yourself the wide and varied aspects of Lurgan Junior High.

With every good wish,

Mrs L E Currie (B.Ed., PQH)
